By combining the expressiveness of visual art and the clarity of the written word, Sequential Art, or comics, is a unique and powerful medium for telling stories and exploring ideas. From fantastical science fiction to autobiography, to hard-hitting journalism, comics can tell any kind of story you want to tell. In this intensive program, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of comics storytelling, pacing, composition, drawing techniques and tools. Then you’ll put it all into practice to create an original, fully realized work of comics art. All skill levels are welcome.

“An additional one week extension on the initial two week course is available, 26 June – 2 July. Please indicate on your application if interested in the extension. ”

The extension is not a separate one week course. It is intended to allow students who attended the first 2 week course the opportunity to work more independently under the close guidance of Seamus Heffernan and put to use the skills obtained during the prior two week course. 

Cost: $4,000 (for 3 week session)

Instructor BIO:

Seamus Heffernan is an illustrator and cartoonist from Portland Oregon. An alumnus of the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, he has explored a wide range of mediums from painting to comics to digital art. A recipient of the Xeric Grant for his original comic book Freedom, Seamus was subsequently short listed for Best American Comic in 2013. He's taught the art of comics across the US and in India and has worked extensively as an illustrator and concept artist in the video game industry.
